I believe that clinical supervision is a parallel process to therapy. It involves fostering growth by helping learners to set their goals and to discover the strength and resources they possess that will allow them to achieve them.

I am a family physician with a special interest in counselling. I was born in Halifax, and graduated in 1979 with a degree of MD CM from the faculty of medicine at McGill University in Montreal. My four year post-graduate residency training was in family medicine. I obtained a Master's degree in family medicine Western University in London, in 1990. A sabbatical year at the University of Oxford in England in 1999 was devoted to research on teaching and learning medicine through patients' stories.

My career included rural general practice for 27 years and on-line counselling for 18 years. My publications include a textbook on counselling, chapters in other textbooks, and over 100 peer-reviewed articles.

My teaching experience includes supervising the clinical work of medical students, family medicine residents, graduate student research, and on-line counsellors. I am currently Associate Professor in the School of Medicine of the University of Minho.
